James promotes Universal Designs that can be accessed, understood and used by all people, regardless of their age, size or ability. He was the Co-Chair of the world’s first National Standards on Universal Design and is the Convenor on a European design process Standard for products and services.

 

James applies UN policy, the WHO-ICF, and international research on accessibility and usability to National, European and International projects for the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design at National Disability Authority, Ireland. He advises on and manages Universal Design research, curriculum development and design events.

 

James is internationally certified in Rehabilitation Engineering and has patented Universal Designs. For over 20 years at university in the USA, he did teaching, research, design consulting and innovation of new products with a focus on Human Factors, Ergonomics, Safety and Assistive Technology.
